Harriet Tubman's heroic and pivotal role in the fight against slavery is the subject of the fourteenth picture book in this New York Times bestselling biography series.
This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great--the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Each book tells the story of one of America's icons in a lively, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers and that always includes the hero's childhood influences. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos. This volume focuses on Harriet Tubman's brave heroism as part of the movement to abolish slavery. As one of the key players in the Underground Railroad, she helped enslaved African Americans escape and find freedom.
***Our Review***
What We Loved:
We absolutely LOVED this one. Meg’s boys have several of the ‘I Am…’ books and they are always a huge hit in her house. The illustrations were gorgeous, the phrasing made it fun to read, and adding all of that to the fact that it was educational made it perfection. If you haven’t gotten your hands on a copy yet, make sure you make it happen soon!
Verdict:
***Mini Swoons Review***
I really like how the pictures were drawn. It was like reading a comic. We talked about some of this stuff at school before, but not all of it. I liked that. I should take it to school so everyone in my class can read about her too. (I asked him if he thought Harriet Tubman was a hero…) I kind of think heroes are like superheroes, but she was so nice and strong, which kind of does make her a superhero.
