We’re so excited to sit down with author C.C. Hunter to talk about her latest title, Eternal, which is the second book in the Shadow Falls: After Dark Series.
***INTERVIEW***
Well, I actually have my editor at St. Martin’s to thank for that. You see, I was writing romance novels under my real name, Christie Craig, when she asked if I wanted to try writing a young adult novel. I was hesitant—actually the thought scared me to death. But she said she even had an idea: a paranormal camp. That’s it! That’s all she said, but I went home and thought about it. My imagination just took over, and Shadow Falls was born.
Hmm… That’s a hard one, because I had a lot of favorite parts.
- Watching Della grow as a person.
- Watching Della get closer to Miranda. (There is one scene between them in the book that made me cry.)
- Watching Della connect with her powers.
- Watching Della and Burnett get closer.
- Watching Della try to fight her feelings and her bond to Chase.
Well, I made the rules to my own world. But I had to constantly make sure I didn’t break my own rules. The thing I worked at the most was making sure Della was authentic. Della has a very sassy, snarky voice and I wanted to make sure that always showed in her thoughts, dialogue and actions. I would attempt to channel Della, and I suppose I was successful because my husband would actually tell me to lose my Della-tude.
Here’s Della. She’s vampire. Her bark is worse than her bite. But she can and will bite, especially if you hurt anyone she cares about. Not one to fail, she doesn’t give up easy. So if she’s on a mission, don’t get in her way, because she takes her responsibilities seriously. Her wit and skewed sense of humor will make you laugh. She may come off confident, maybe even overly confident, but deep down she’s just as insecure as you and I. If you ask her advice or her opinion, she’ll give it you, and she won’t sugar coat it either. If you are lucky enough to become her friend, you’ve made a friend for life. She loyal to those she loves.
This is difficult. I guess I feel more attached to my own characters because I spend months writing about them and only a few days reading about someone else’s characters. When I wrote the scene in Eternal when Steve and Della have their ‘talk,’ I cried and wanted to hug Steve. When Chase pulled his sunglasses down and sent Della one of those sexy gazes, I wanted to kiss him. This isn’t to say that I don’t swoon over other writer’s heroes. I still think about Rafe in Kelly Armstrong’s book, The Gathering, and I occasionally find myself daydreaming about Will and Cassian from Sophie Jordan’s Firelight Series.
“Do you really not know which guy is going to win Della’s heart?”
And the answer: No. I don’t plot out my books ahead of time. I’m just now starting the last book in Della’s series, so I don’t know what’s going to happen. Della has this entire book to decipher her feelings. She still doesn’t know all of Chase’s secrets. She’s uncertain where Steve’s journey will take him and if it will take him away from her. And we all know that sometimes the hurdles we face, the hardships we overcome, can sway our emotions. I’m looking forward to discovering the answers as much as the readers are.
***About C.C. Hunter***
C.C. Hunter grew up in Alabama, where she caught lightning bugs, ran barefoot, and regularly rescued potential princes, in the form of Alabama bullfrogs, from her brothers. Today, she’s still fascinated with lightning bugs, mostly wears shoes, but has turned her focus to rescuing mammals. She now lives in Texas with her four rescued cats, one dog, and a prince of a husband, who for the record, is so not a frog. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, spending time with her family, or is shooting things-with a camera, not a gun.
C.C. Hunter is a pseudonym. Her real name is Christie Craig and she also writes humorous romantic suspense romance novels for Grand Central.
