Series, Series, Series. You know them, you love them… or sometimes you love to hate them. This year we have started, read, avoided, and finished so many series that we want to share our thoughts / favorites with all of you!
This was a tough topic for us, especially since we both approached 2015 in very different ways when it came to series. Ready to hear our thoughts? Let’s go…
Kass’ Thoughts
Over the past year or so, I have barely read any books that were in an incomplete series. I mentioned this in our last podcast–I feel left out when I’m not reading the same thing everyone else is, but it sure is nice not to be overwhelmed by the “OMG WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN!?!” I read the entire Defy series by Sara B. Larson, and let me just say–thank rob I waited until it was complete! The ending of Ignite would have driven me crazy if I would’ve had to wait an entire year to find out what happened next. Because of that, I don’t think I’ve read many books in a series at all this year. With that being said, I’m all about series that have standalone, companion books. I’ve read tons of New Adult (and Adult) series like that, but I won’t go on and on about my favorites here because that would take forever. I have noticed this seems to be a trend hitting Young Adult books, too, and I couldn’t be happier.
One of my favorites is the Hundred Oaks Series by Miranda Kenneally. I love her realistic characters and fun writing style. Jesse’s Girl was released in July, and I loved it. Along that same vein, I really enjoyed the companion to The DUFF by Kody Keplinger, which you know is one of my favorite books ever. Lying Out Loud featured Wesley Rush’s little sister, and it was awesome. I also really loved Nowhere But Here, the first book in Katie McGarry’s Thunder Road series, and I think Jennifer Echol’s Superlatives series is worth checking out, especially the last one: Most Likely to Succeed.
I can’t deal with the peer pressure, though. I’m going back to reading series-in-progress, starting with the Red Rising Series this week! I know, I know. It’s cheating because Morning Star comes out soon, but baby steps. (It’s about freaking time! – Meg)
Meg’s Thoughts
Let me just start by saying, I have no self-control. Sometimes I wish that I could be strong like Kass and not start new series, but as soon as I even think the words, my next thoughts are- GIVE ME ALL THE BOOKS. There’s no way I can could resist them. Just this year alone I have started and loved:
- Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
- A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses#1) by Sarah J. Maas
- Six of Crows (Six of Crows #1) by Leigh Bardugo
I have also read some second and third books in these series:
- Golden Son by Pierce Brown (Book #2 of 3)- All I have to say is, IS IT FEBRUARY 9th YET?!?
- Ignite & Endure by Sara B. Larson (Books #2 and #3 of 3)- If you haven’t already, get these books now!
- The Winner’s Crime by Marie Rutkoski (Book #2 of 3)- Holy freaking cliffhanger, Batman.
- Invaded by Melissa Landers (Book #2 of 3)- Cannot wait for the last book in this trilogy.
- The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon (Book #2 of ??)- This series might just kill me before it’s over.
- The Boy Most Likely To by Huntley Fitzpatrick (Book #3 of ??)- Not technically a series, but I’m counting companions and these are some of the best.
- Their Fractured Light by Amie Kaufman and Meaghan Spooner (Book #3 of 3)- Again, these are companions… but they just get better with each book.
- Smoked by Mari Mancusi (Book #3 of 3)- Love this series. Grab them now, you’ll be so glad you did!
Don’t get me wrong though. Some of these have left me borderline crazy with need or the next book, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s worth it. I love when I know a good standalone is on the way (coughMetaltownbyKristenSimmonscough), but there’s just something about knowing that you can count on more of a kick-ass heroine or swoony boy when you’re reading a series. Can you imagine if Harry Potter only had one book? Or if you only had The Hobbit?
Sometimes less is more, but when it comes to books I almost always think that more is more.
