When the four of us are together, in person or via the magic of the internet, the conversations almost always come back to books. We love them. We love the people who write them, the people who publish them, and the people who read them. In fact, we have so many feelings about books that we wanted to find a way to share our conversations with you!
This is the fifth week of our new feature, hosted by Fiction Fare (Erin & Jaime) and Swoony Boys Podcast (Kassiah & Meg). Spotlight Sundayis about ALL things bookish. Each week we’ll post a topic, we’ll start the conversation by telling you some of our thoughts, and then it will be your turn to sound off in the comment section.
What do you think will be the next “big thing” in 2014? (Mythology, Contemp, Vamps, etc.)
Meg: I’m not sure if it’s just wishful thinking or what. But I’ve been thinking for a few months now that 2014 will be the year of the Contemporary book. That’s not to say that there aren’t some amazing books coming out in all genres, but I think that the majority of my most anticipated books this year are contemporary! What are you guy thinking we’ll see a lot of this year?
Erin: Like you said Meg, maybe it is wishful thinking but I am hopeful for Fantasy/High Fantasy. This has been one of my favorite genres and don’t get me wrong, I love other genres as well but there is something about Fantasy/High Fantasy books that just pull me in. With new books by Leigh Bardugo and Sarah Maas this year I am hoping it will only be the beginning and everyone will want to create some new next best High Fantasy novel.
Jaime: I’m with Meg on this… as much as I love dystopian and fantasy, it seems that a lot of what I’m really looking forward to this year are contemporaries. I just seem to drift in a certain direction when I’m reading and this year seems to be the year of the contemporary, at least for me. That said, I do have a few fantasy books that are at the top of my list to read immediately upon release!
Kassiah: I’m not sure what I think this is the “year” of. I definitely think popularity for retellings (in any form) is on the rise, and I think dystopian is on a down-trend. I also think paranormal is picking up toward the end of the year, if the titles we know about are any indication.
Meg: I need to use this question as an excuse (do I really need one?) to try some new things. I crave contemporaries and dystopian, but I also know I need to branch out and try some new things, like Erin’s fantasy favs and maybe a few new sci-fi books too! So many reads, so little time. Right? Is there anything you hope it ISN’T the year of? hahaha
Kassiah: Good question. I hope this isn’t the year of horror. I know, it’s crazy, but I just don’t like to be scared! There are so many awesome books I wish I could read, but can’t because they’re too scary. Or have too many bugs. Ew.
Now that you’ve read some of our thoughts, let us know what you’re thinking in the comments below! We’ll be back next week with a brand new topic and lots more to talk about.

Dragons! I think more YA authors are incorporating them in their books this year.
Oohhh.. Like Tammy said, dragons would be a great new trend. I love a good dragon story. What I am hoping for this year is the exact opposite of Kassiah’s hope.. I want this to be the year of actual YA horror stories, genuinely scary. It is almost impossible to find YA books that are horror that are actually scary and I would love it if this year, we got a whole bunch of them!
I am with Erin on this one. I think this year’s gonna be all about Fantasy ! I personally love all genres especially some good ol’ horror but Fantasy is the next best thing for me ! So I am hoping there’s gonna be more Fantasy than Contemporaries this year !!
