One Life to One Dawn.
In a land ruled by a murderous boy-king, each dawn brings heartache to a new family. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, is a monster. Each night he takes a new bride only to have a silk cord wrapped around her throat come morning. When sixteen-year-old Shahrzad's dearest friend falls victim to Khalid, Shahrzad vows vengeance and volunteers to be his next bride. Shahrzad is determined not only to stay alive, but to end the caliph's reign of terror once and for all.
Night after night, Shahrzad beguiles Khalid, weaving stories that enchant, ensuring her survival, though she knows each dawn could be her last. But something she never expected begins to happen: Khalid is nothing like what she'd imagined him to be. This monster is a boy with a tormented heart. Incredibly, Shahrzad finds herself falling in love. How is this possible? It's an unforgivable betrayal. Still, Shahrzad has come to understand all is not as it seems in this palace of marble and stone. She resolves to uncover whatever secrets lurk and, despite her love, be ready to take Khalid's life as retribution for the many lives he's stolen. Can their love survive this world of stories and secrets?
Inspired by A Thousand and One Nights, The Wrath and the Dawn is a sumptuous and enthralling read from beginning to end.
The 411:
The boy king, Khalid, takes a new bride each evening only to have her killed come dawn. After Shahrzad’s best friend falls victim to the Khalid, Shazi swears she’ll get revenge. Shahrzad volunteers as his bride but what the she didn’t prepare for was the fact that Khalid may not be the man she thought he was.
What We Loved:
Where do we even begin?! We loved so much about this book. The Wrath & the Dawn had us hooked from the first line. By page 82, we were completely in love. If you’re looking for a book that will make you feel something, this is it. It’s filled with rich culture and wise word play, no wonder Renee Ahdieh has become a new favorite for us. We can’t wait to see what the sequel holds!
Um...Not So Much:
We wish the book had explained more of what Shazi’s father has up his sleeves, because this wait is torturous!
The Boys:
Khalid– Caliph of Khorasan, King of Kings. Though Shazi thinks Khalid is nothing but a monster, thanks to the prologue we know that there is more to it than that from the very beginning. Page 82 people, we bet it makes you swoon like it did for us. Seriously, there were goose bumps involved.
Tariq– Shazi’s first love, her childhood love. We give him a 7 on the Swoon-o-Meter™ because he thinks he knows Shazi’s heart better than she does and refuses to give up.
Jalal.– Khalid’s cousin, handsome and charming. Overly cocky.
Bottom Line:
We love this book and we think you will too! We are anxiously awaiting its sequel, The Rose & The Dagger, set to come out May 2016.
Verdict:
I am SO happy you liked “The Wrath and the Dawn”! It is one of my favorites, and I cannot wait until “The Rose and the Dagger” comes out next year! Great review!
We can’t wait, either!!
