Character Interview

Hi, Tony! Welcome to Swoony Boys Podcast. This is our first time interviewing a superhero and a CEO, so we’re a little nervous! But we’ve come prepared! Are you ready? Here we go…

Let’s start off easy. If Saoirse and Friday were to describe you in three words. What words would they use?

Ginormous self-esteem.

We are going to dig a little deeper now. You had an “interesting” family life growing up. What advice would you give to kids who might be in a similar situation?

I would advise kids growing up with a domineering dad to stay strong because you never know which family meal is your last and you don’t want the last words you say to your father to be: Yeah, Dad. Whatever.

Being a superhero can’t be easy. Sometimes things you do are questioned. What makes you a hero and not a vigilante? Is it hard to stay on the hero side of the line?

That’s a tough one. Sometimes doing good gets a hero in trouble. I think a person has to have a very strong personal code not to let that power go to their head. I think I am kept honest by all the guilt I feel over my company’s arms dealings in the past.

What makes you a successful CEO? Do you have any business advice for up and coming business leaders?

Stay in control of the company. Don’t be tempted to hand over the reins while you swan around the world on private jets or take time off for Burning Man. There’s always someone who thinks they can do your job better than you so don’t give them the chance.

What’s the best part about being Iron Man? The worst?

Can I tell you a secret? There’s nothing bad about being Iron Man. Nothing! It’s so cool you have no idea. I can fly for heaven’s sake. And shoot repulsor beams out of my hands. What’s not to love?

Meet Eoin Colfer

Eoin Colfer (pronounced Owen) was born in Wexford on the South-East coast of Ireland in 1965, where he and his four brothers were brought up by his father and mother, who were both educators.

He received his degree from Dublin University and began teaching primary school in Wexford. He has lived and worked all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Italy. After the publication of the Artemis Fowl novels, Eoin retired from teaching and now writes full time. He lives in Ireland with his wife and two children.
